Thursday Night Storm Damage Assessment Continues

Greensboro and Guilford County emergency services are currently assessing damage in northwest Greensboro today due to the severe storm that passed through the area overnight.

Officials have established a mobile command station at the Piedmont Triad Farmer's Market on Sandy Ridge Road for area business owners to report to before attempting to enter their establishments. Business owners may also call the command station at 708-5037.

Area residents with non-emergency questions can call Greensboro's Call Center at 373-CITY (2489).

Also, there was some disruption of water and sewer services in the area affected by last night’s storm. Greensboro Water Resources crews are working to identify problems and restore both sewer and water services. Disruptions are the result of both power supply and physical damage to facilities.

Anyone who needs to report a water or sewer problem should call 373-CITY (2489).

Tiles from the Heart

Winners in the upcoming Police Memorial Week 5K run to support Special Olympics will receive prizes far more meaningful -- and Sherry Ryandefinitely more unique -- than trophies or medals. The winners will be presented with hand-painted ceramic tiles, created by students at Gateway Education Center, with a little help from some officers and employees of the Greensboro Police Department.

On Friday, May 2, the GPD staff visited the school, which serves children with severe mental and/or physical disabilities, and helped them paint some 40 tiles. Officer Sherry Ryan, who serves as the GPD's chairperson for the Special Olympics Committee, said this marks the fourth year that officers and staff have volunteered their time to assist the students.

"It's amazing to work with these kids," Officer Ryan said. "They get so excited when we come to visit."

Participating in the painting activity along with Ryan were Assistant Chief Dwight Crotts, Officer Eddie Bruscino, Officer Tom Branson, Captain Janice Rogers, and Teresa Small. The race takes place on Saturday, May 10.
