High IQ Bowl High IQ Logo

Now in its 41st year, the High IQ Bowl is a scholastic competition that brings together the top students from North Carolina and Virginia. In this Greensboro Youth Council program, outstanding high school juniors and seniors compete against one another for cash scholarships. The High IQ Bowl is an all-day event. The qualifying rounds are held in the morning, and the final rounds are held in the afternoon. The tournament winner is sent to the National Championship.

Registration Deadline

The registration deadline has been extened until January 18. The first 30 teams to register will be accepted. Non-residential high school juinors and seniors from any county in North Carolina and Virginia are eligible to enter, with a maximum of two juniors per team.

Qualifying Rounds
February 16, 2008
The traditional “Super Saturday” qualifying round will be held at Grimsley High School. The qualifying competition narrows 30 teams to eight teams. Each team competes against itself. The goal is to score as many points as possible during the oral delivery of 80 questions.

Qualifying Rounds Schedule

  • 9:30-10 am - Team Check-in at Bowl Desk
  • 10-10:20 am - Opening Assembly for Second Round Teams
  • 10:30 am-12 noon - Team Question Session
  • 12-12:30 pm - Closing Assembly

Final Rounds
February 16, 2008
The final rounds determine the winner of the High IQ Bowl. This is a single elimination tournament that begins at 2:30 pm on the same day as the qualifying rounds. The top eight finalists are treated to a finalist luncheon, which begins at 12:30 pm at Grimsley High School.

Teams are seeded according to scores from the qualifying rounds.

  • 2:30 pm - Round A (team 1 vs. 8)
  • 2:55 pm - Round B (team 4 vs. 5)
  • 3:20 pm - Round C (team 2 vs. 7)
  • 3:45 pm - Round D (team 3 vs. 6)

Semi Finals

  • 4:10 pm - Round E (Winner of Round A vs. B)
  • 4:35 pm - Round F (Winner of Round C vs. D)

Finals

  • 5 pm - Round G (Winner of Round E vs. F)

Question Topics
There will be 16 questions in each of the following categories of the qualifying rounds:

  • English (including ): American Literature, English Literature, English Language, Grammar, Spelling
  • Social Studies (including): American History, World History, Geography, Social Studies, North Carolina History
  • Mathematics (including): Algebra, Geometry, Calculus
  • Science (including): Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, Astronomy
  • Culture (including): Current Events, Sports, Pop Culture, Performing Arts, Fine Art

Pooja Sarin

Pooja Sarin is this year’s High IQ Bowl Chairperson. Pooja is a junior at Western Guilford High School where she also participates in cross country. This is her third year in the Greensboro Youth Council.
