About District 1
District 1 reaches from Ward Road in the northeast, along Old Burlington Road to Highway 29, includes a portion of downtown Greensboro, then proceeds southeast to Oakland Avenue to High Point Road and Pinecroft Road on the west. This district extends south to I-85 following the I-85 loop to the east and then north along I-840 (Urban Loop), incorporating several satellite annexation areas on both sides of I-85, including annexed areas along Knox Road and Birch Creek Road.
The district has a long history of being an important part of Greensboro’s history. Of particular interest in this district are:
- Barber Park – Barber Park features a one mile, multiple-use trail around the 109-acre park. Other amenities include picnic shelters, a baseball stadium and an outdoor amphitheater. The Simkins Indoor Sports Pavilion at the park features indoor tennis and basketball year-round. Barber Park is also the home of an 18-hole disc golf course, created for the 1998 North Carolina State Games.
- Brown Recreation Center and Park – Brown Recreation Center and Park offers a variety of classes, as well as a meeting room, an exercise room, gym, walking trails, and more.
- Gillespie Golf Course – Carved out of 85 acres, Gillespie Golf Course provides a challenging 9-hole layout for golfers at all skill levels. The clubhouse, which offers a pro shop and concessions area, overlooks a practice putting green. Gillespie Golf Course is the home of the annual Gillespie Invitational Golf Tournament, which attracts players from all over the
Piedmont for a 36-hole stroke play competition.
- Glenwood Library – Glenwood Library, located on West Florida Street, is home to the Nonprofit Resource Center, the Greensboro Neighborhood Information Center, and the Multicultural Resource Center. Here you will find the Library's foreign language learning collection, as well as materials in at least nine different languages.
- Greensboro Coliseum Complex – The Coliseum brings numerous sporting and entertainment events to the area. It has hosted major entertainers including Elvis, Madonna, and Usher. Prestigious sporting events hosted at the Coliseum include ACC and NCAA basketball tournaments and ECHL hockey.
- TZ Osborne Water Treatment Plant – Located in the adjacent community of McLeansville, this plant conducts water reclamation procedures. The multi-stage process renovates wastewater by removing or reducing organic matter, solids, nutrients, disease-causing organisms, and other pollutants before being discharged back into local creeks and streams.
- War Memorial Auditorium – As part of the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, this venue features a spectacular two-story lobby, a permanent wall-to-wall stage floor coupled with a functioning hydraulic orchestra lift that rises to stage level, and permanent-tiered and multi-level seating for 2,376. The Auditorium is the home of the Greensboro Symphony, with annual performances by the Greensboro
Opera Company and the Greensboro Ballet.
- Wet ‘N Wild Emerald Pointe Water Park – This largest water park in the Carolinas offers over 36 different rides at 3910 South Holden Road open from Memorial Day through Labor Day only.
