Human Relations Commission to hold Community Forum and Panel Discussion on Hate Crimes

GREENSBORO, NC --(June 2, 2009) — The Greensboro Human Relations Commission is sponsoring a community forum on hate crimes that target individuals because of race, ethnicity or national origin. The forum will be held Wednesday, June 3, from 6-8 pm in Preyer Hall at the Greensboro Historical Museum, 130 Summit Ave.

“We invite the community to come together to learn about the prevalence of hate crimes in our community,” said Human Relations Chair Maxine Bakeman. “We are pleased to have Gene Troy, a regional expert from the North Carolina Human Relations Commission, as the opening speaker to discuss state-wide trends and the prevalence of hate crimes locally.”

In addition, there will be a panel discussion with local representatives who will talk about violence resulting from bigotry as it impacts diverse groups. Recommendations for the prevention of such crimes and resources for victims of hate crimes will also be provided.

This community forum is free and open to the public. Parking is available in several lots around the museum, and in parking decks located on Davie Street and next to the Central Library on Church Street.

Any individual with a disability who needs auxiliary aids or services for this meeting may
contact the Human Relations Department at 373-2038 or 333-6930 (TDD).
