Facts Related to the 2008 Annexation

  • The 2008 annexation cycle includes both City-initiated (CI) and annexation petitions (AP) in close proximity; however, by far the largest area (80+ percent) is in the CI areas. What is the difference?
  • City-initiated annexations have many state procedures to follow, with required resolutions, reports, mailings, public meeting, public hearing and ordinance adoption steps. See the annexation schedule.
  • The public process for the City-initiated annexation begins on September 4 with Resolutions of Intent presented to City Council and ends on June 30, 2008, the effective date of the annexation.
  • For this annexation, the City focused on areas where City services were either within or in close proximity to affected areas. Some of the services given special attention on this review were water and sewer, fire, police, solid waste, parks and libraries.
  • The City-initiated annexation includes 12 separate areas that total about 4,490 acres (seven square miles), with 3960 dwelling units and a population of about 10,144. Eighty to 90 percent of the annexation area and affected population is in the northwest.
  • This annexation is the first City-initiated annexation in three years.
  • Combined City-initiated and annexation petitions include slightly more than eight square miles.
