2008 Parks & Recreation Bond

In November, voters will be asked to consider a $20 million package of Parks and Recreational Facilities Bonds. If the bond issue is approved by voters, the following projects would be funded:

Regional Competitive Aquatic Center
The competitive aquatics center would be used for regional swim meets, city swim meets, local swim team practice space, public swimming, swim instruction, and other aquatic activities. The facility would include one 50-meter pool, a diving well, a warm-up pool, spectator seating and participant / spectator amenities. ($12 million)

Athletic Field Development
Artificial turf would be installed at the Hester Park complex. ($2.64 million)

Park Reinvestment

  • Smith Senior Center improvements, specifically: an ADA accessible entrance on the north side of the building, a paved parking lot with associated landscaping, a shelter, and a multi-purpose practice field for Senior Games. ($200,000)
  • Neighborhood park renovations, specifically: renovation of aging parks that were developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This project would be the first phase of system-wide park renovations. Neighborhood parks intended for renovation in this phase include Sussman, Steelman, Heath and Bingham parks. As a precursor to each project, the Parks & Recreation Department will develop an in-house master plan, with significant public input. Renovations are likely to include the installation or repaving of walkways, the repair or replacement of facilities, the installation of new park features, and demolition of features as necessary. ($310,575)

Pools

  • Pool repairs, specifically: repairs to the aging infrastructure at Lindley, Peeler, Warnersville, and Windsor pools. Planned repairs include deck surface repair, replacement of chlorine feeders, pumps, purchase of automatic chemical feeders, repair of leaks and valves, and fence repairs and upgrades. ($213,675)
  • Pool upgrade, specifically: renovation of Grimsley pool to keep it in safe working order. ($435,750)

Facility Investment

  • Gateway Gardens Phase II, specifically: construction of a botanical garden, developed by Greensboro Beautiful Inc., in partnership with the Parks & Recreation Department . ($1 million)
  • Barber Park Master Plan Implementation Phase II, specifically: a community center, maintenance facility and supporting infrastructure. Further public input is anticipated, prior to selecting from the Phase II menu of amenities. ($3 million)
  • Restroom at Gillespie Golf Course, specifically: construction of a restroom facility to serve golf patrons. ($200,000)
