Be Prepared for Spring Storms

Now that spring is here, the possibility increases for thunderstorms, high winds and flooding. Family emergency planning can be the key to surviving an emergency. That’s why it’s important to talk to your family to prepare them for various emergencies. Recognize that in extreme situations, City emergency resources may be limited. Be prepared to care for yourself and your family for at least three days by taking the following steps.

  • Create a family disaster plan. Include things such as meeting locations for you and your family inside and outside of the house, learning local emergency contact numbers, and determining safe locations in your home.
  • Create a family disaster supply kit. Include enough food and water to sustain you and your family for three days, along with medications, first aid items, diapers, etc.
  • Create a family communications plan. Know the phone numbers to get in touch with every member of your family, create a meeting place, and determine alternate methods to contact each of your family members.
