Budget & Bonds Update

A public hearing on the proposed 2006-2007 budget was held at the June 6 Council meeting. Approximately 30 citizens gave input on the budget. Council met on June 8 to discuss the input provided and to finalize the budget. They tentatively agreed to a 4.75-cent increase in the property tax rate. They will vote on whether to adopt the proposed budget at the June 20 Council meeting.

Also, at the June 6 meeting, Council voted to approve the next step in the bond process, authorizing the application for approval of the bonds with the Local Government Commission. Council has tentatively selected 11 items to appear on a fall bond referendum. At the June 20 Council meeting, the bond items will be finalized and dates set for public hearings.

The Next Generation of Meter Reading

The Water Resources Department is implementing RadioRead, an automated meter reading technology designed to improve customer service. This technology has become an industry standard among water, gas, and electric utilities across the nation. RadioRead uses a transmitter installed on a water meter to electronically collect readings. The transmitter then sends meter readings via radio frequency, allowing meter readers to collect multiple readings from one location. RadioRead improves upon the manual method of collecting data by providing superior speed, accuracy and reliability.

Portions of the city have already been converted to RadioRead, but the entire process will take approximately two to three years. During installation, residential customers may experience a slight change in water flow and pressure, due to the entry of air into the lines. This will clear up by running your water for a few moments. For additional information, call 373-CITY (2489) or visit the Water Resources Department's website.
