Barber Park: Drinking Water Unaffected

Tests continue on contaminated soil found at the park.

The City has received many questions from the public and the media since first announcing the existence of contaminated soil at Barber Park. Although we cannot yet answer all questions, here is what we know:

Surface soils have not been tested, but will be. The contaminants discovered were underground and found during the construction of a parking lot. When odors were noticed, soil samples were taken, and the soil dug up by the contractors was piled at the site and covered with plastic as a means to reduce public contact. The samples were sent for analysis, the construction site was fenced off, and the park Waterwas closed until we could be certain there was no risk to park visitors.

Although some contaminants were found in groundwater, this in no way affects the public water being supplied to residents in this or any other part of the city. Depending on how the site is used and the type and amount of contamination in the water, state regulations sometimes allow contaminated groundwater to be left untreated when public water is available, as it is in this area. Downtown Parking Meter Rate Increase

One-hour meters will increase from 25 to 50 cents.

Beginning July 1, downtown parking meter rates will increase from 25 cents per hour to 50 cents per hour. The increase is part of a larger effort to meet the changing parking needs of downtown Greensboro by encouraging drivers to use metered parking for short-term visits and downtown parking decks and lots for long-term needs.

Rates for downtown parking meters have not increased since 1969. The current rate of 25 cents for 15-minute and 30-minute meters will remain the same, as well as the $5 fine for parking violations.

New Bike Route Maps

The City's Transportation Department has produced a new bicycle map that provides an overview of road conditions and routes for bicycling. The new map includes roads, greenways, major destinations, and safety tips, and shows the suitability ratings of main roadways to help you create your own route. You can download the new bicycle map here. Printed copies should be available later this summer.
