Area Forecast Calls for Potential Significant Overnight Flooding

GREENSBORO, NC -- (September 29, 2010) -- Forecasters today are warning of the potential of significant rainfall during the next 24-36 hours for Greensboro and the surrounding area. Residents are urged by the Greensboro Fire Department to prepare for flooding now to prevent exposure to unnecessary danger later.

First, find out if your home is in a flood-prone area. Go to the FEMA Map Service Center at www.msc.fema.gov and type in your address; the map will indicate the flood potential in your area. Also, read more about flood preparation on the Fire Department's website at www.greensboro-nc.gov/departments/Fire/emergency/emergencies/floods.htm.

Next, use Weather Alert radios to stay informed about severe weather notifications. These radios may be purchased at many local retailers.

Other important points to remember are:

  • Plan for evacuation early. Have medications, clothes, pets, and pet food read to go.
  • Identify alternative housing. Emergency officials will continually evaluate the need for opening emergency shelters, however, if you leave your residence before these shelters are open, you should already have identified alternative housing.
  • Have alternative routes of travel planned. You may only know one way to and from your residence and if this path is blocked or obstructed by flooding, you may attempt to drive through the area, which is dangerous.
  • Never drive through standing or moving water. You do not know how deep a standing body of water is or how deep or how fast moving water is. If you are caught in this situation, stay with your vehicle until first responders arrive.
  • If you have to leave your home, shut off the main breaker to cut electrical service and reduce or eliminate the possibility of a fire from an electrical short.

More information about emergency preparedness is also on the Fire Department's website at www.greensboro-nc.gov/departments/Fire/emergency/preparedness

Fire Department officials remind residents that their awareness of severe weather and advanced planning can help ensure their safety.
