Traffic Signal Maintenance

The Traffic Signal division installs, operates and maintains traffic control devices in the City of Greensboro. Currently, the division operates and maintains 416 traffic signals, 30 continuous flashers, 13 activated flashers, 43 school flashers, the reversible lane system on High Point Road, 16 variable message signs around the coliseum, and more than 10traffic signal maintenance0 miles of communications cable connecting the traffic signals to the central computer system.

Additionally, 82 of Greensboro’s traffic signals are equipped with fire pre-emption. This equipment gives fire vehicles a green light, enabling them to arrive quickly and safely to an emergency call.

Properly functioning traffic signals are the division's highest priority. Staff generally respond to maintenance and repair calls within one hour. The staff consists of four technicians, eight construction mechanics, and two supervisors. One employee is always on call to keep the signals functioning properly.

All signal locations are on a yearly preventative maintenance schedule to verify proper operation, and each bulb in the traffic signal is replaced on a three-year cycle to minimize bulb failures. The City has also implemented a program to install low-power LED (Light Emitting Diode) traffic signal indicators at selected locations. The LED indicators use far less energy than a traditional incandescent bulb and will last 10 years or more.

Look for new countdown pedestrian signals in the downtown area. These new signals, which use cost-saving LED indicators, count down the time remaining for pedestrians to cross the street.

To report a signal malfunction or bulb failure,
call 373-CITY (7 am – 5:30 pm) or 373-2222 (after hours).
