Pace Car Program
The Pace Car Program is an innovative new citizen-based program offered by the Greensboro Department of Transportation that is designed to calm traffic on Greensboro's busy streets. The program is modeled after similar programs that have been successfully implemented in other US cities. By signing the Pace Car Pledge and displaying the Pace Car window/bumper sticker, Greensboro citizens set the pace for safer Greensboro streets.
How does it work?
Citizens take the Pace Car Pledge and agree to:
- Drive within the speed limit on City streets, especially in residential areas
- Stop at all stop signs
- Stop at all red lights
- Stop to let pedestrians cross the street
- Be courteous to bicyclists
- Display the Pace Car sticker
Citizens who take the pledge are asked to display a Pace Car sticker on the rear of their vehicle to let other motorists know that they are a Pace Car and to "Follow Me...Slow The Speed." Pace Car stickers are available in two different colors/shapes (yellow triangle, red car) as a static window sticker or bumper sticker. Participants are also given a small yellow Pace Car static sticker that is to be placed inside the vehicle so that the driver sees the sticker and is reminded of the Pace Car pledge.
Since Pace Car participants follow speed limits, vehicles driving behind a Pace Car must also obey the speed limit. If enough Greensboro citizens take the pledge and become Pace Cars, then speeding motorists are slowed and Greensboro becomes a safer community. The Greensboro Department of Transportation encourages all citizens to become Pace Cars!
Neighborhood Participation
The most effective way to reduce speeding traffic along your street with the Pace Car Program is participation from the neighborhood. If 75 percent of the residents along a street participate in the Pace Car Program and the Neighborhood Speed Watch Program, GDOT will provide recognition for the neighborhood's efforts.
A sign will be installed illustrating the neighborhood's concern with speeding traffic and traffic safety. The signs will remain posted if the neighborhood participates in the Neighborhood Speed Watch Program twice a year. This program allows citizens to check out radar equipment and record vehicle speeds along their street. This data will be provided to the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) and additional enforcement will be provided if warranted. For more information on the Neighborhood Speed Watch Program, contact the Greensboro Department of Transportation.
