Permits

The City of Greensboro requires permits for conducting any type of activity in or along public streets and sidewalks that may impede traffic flow or pedestrian activity. Permits are required to build and connect a new commercial driveway, conduct parades, block streets or sidewalks, work in the street or sidewalk or move a house.

Parade permitsParade Permits

The City of Greensboro Special Events office issues permits for parades as well as other special events. Greensboro Police Department coordinates the route of parades with Traffic Engineering staff. Visit the Special Events website for more information.


Lane Closure Permits

A permit to block a sidewalk and/or street is required whenever a portion of a sidewalk and/or street is to be blocked in any way that will alter traffic flow, affect parking, or alter pedestrian patterns. Permits to block a sidewalk and/or street shall be issued in accordance with all the requirements of Chapter 18, Article III, and Chapter 26, Article I of the Greensboro Code of Ordinances, Chapter XXIV of the North Carolina State Building Code, Part VI of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and with the City’s Work Area Traffic Control Handbook published by the Greensboro Department of Transportation, and of any other limitations that may be set forth in the permit.

All permits to block travel lanes should conform to the City of Greensboro Peak Hour Traffic Disruption Policy

A fee of $30 is required for permits to block City streets or sidewalks. For any event that exceeds three days, a fee of $60 is required for a period of up to one month and thereafter $30 for each additional month.

House Moving Permits

House moving permitsA house moving permit is required to move a house on public streets. A police escort is required for houses in excess of 8 feet wide or 12 feet, 6 inches tall.

House moves along major routes are required to take place on Sundays from 6 to 10 am. When a building is to be moved along a street in Greensboro that is maintained by the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT), a permit must also be obtained from NCDOT.
