US 29 is currently a limited-access, four-lane divided freeway passing through the eastern portion of Greensboro. This north-south freeway has been identified as a Congressional High Priority Corridor. The section of the US 29 corridor selected for study in this project extends from I-85 / I-40 to Summit Avenue, is 3.6 miles with 14 access/egress locations.

This study evaluated short-term improvements to the US 29 study corridor that can be implemented with the limited funds available to the City of Greensboro and the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The purpose of this study is to maintain US 29 as a viable transportation corridor that serves the immediate needs of improved access, safety, and connectivity while maintaining accessibility to adjacent land uses.

The study recommended consolidating interchange accesses by eliminating several ramps. The following ramps have been closed: 

1. Bothwell Street 
2. Eton Drive 
3. Spencer Street 
4. Lutheran Street (west side) 
5. Woodside Drive 
6. Ryan Street 
7. Gatewood Avenue

The following ramps were also identified to be closed and will be closed as funding becomes available from NCDOT:

1. Lutheran Street (east side)
2. Headquarters Drive (east side) 
3. Headquarters Drive (west side partial closure – SB exit ramp)
4. Textile Drive (east side) 
5. Textile Drive (west side)

The study also identified ramp improvements and intersection improvements at the following locations: 

1. Hooks Street 
2. Lee Street 
3. East Market Street 
4. Wendover Avenue (minor ramp improvements) 
5. Phillips Avenue and White/Tucker Street
