Traffic Signals

Signal System MonitorThe Traffic Signal administrative staff conducts studies to determine where traffic signals are needed, prepares traffic signal designs, and oversees the operation and optimization of 413 signalized intersections. Of the 413 traffic signals, 361 are monitored and controlled from a central computerized control system.

The central computerized control system monitors and coordinates the operation of signals along heavily travelled routes, enabling operators to optimize traffic flow along busy thoroughfares.

The locations of new traffic signals are determined by counting traffic at candidate intersections and applying uniform guidelines, or warrants, developed by the Federal Highway Administration. Volume of traffic, accident history, and intersection spacing are all factors in determining the placement of new traffic signals.
