Air Quality
The Greensboro Urban Area is designated as non-attainment for Particulate Matter 2.5 and maintenance for One-Hour Ozone. The designations were made by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and require the MPO to analyze the impact of transportation projects on air quality. The MPO specifically must show that the area will conform to federal air quality standards after transportation projects are completed. The analysis is based on environmental factors and the amount of projected vehicle travel on the roadway once projects are completed.
The MPO also takes steps to maintain the area's conformity with federal air quality standards and to ensure that the area's federally funded transportation projects remain on schedule. On a regional scale, the MPO coordinates and cooperates with other jurisdictions and agencies to implement long-term air quality improvements in the Piedmont Triad.
