iPod Users
Here are some resources for free downloadable audio for iPods:

LibriVox

LibriVox provides free audiobooks from the public domain. There are currently more than 950 titles in the MP3 or oog formats. LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain and releases the audio files back onto the net. Its goal is to make all public domain books available as free audio books.

Audiobooks for Free

This site offers MP3, iPod and DVD audiobooks (adventures, detectives, horrors, classics, children, nonfictions, philosophy, etc.) for you to download and enjoy. Every audio book is produced and recorded by professional actors / narrators and experienced directors. Listen to MP3 audio books on your computer, mobile phone, PDA, portable DVD player or portable MP3 player, including iPods. Alternatively, you can convert the MP3 files into an ordinary audio CD for your CD player, hi-fi or car stereo. Please be aware that the free downloads on this site are of very low quality. Even the Web site owner refers to the quality as "bearable." However, the site does offer various low-cost purchase options that allow you to obtain the audiobooks in a range of higher quality versions and different formats.

Open Culture Audio Podcast Collection

Open Culture explores cultural and educational media (podcasts, videos, online courses, etc.) that are freely available on the Web, and that make learning dynamic, productive, and fun. The audio book collection here is on the small side, but there are many links to interesting audio podcasts of all kinds.

The Spoken Alexandria Project

The Spoken Alexandria Project is creating a free Creative Commons library of spoken word recordings, consisting of classics in the public domain and modern works (with permission). AAC, Ogg Vorbis, and MP3 audiobooks available for free download and redistribution.

Literal Systems: Audio Books You Just Can't Buy

LiteralSystems.org makes audio books drawn from great literature freely available to the public through a contemporary avenue, such as listening with iPods. Being free, these audiobooks never need to be returned. They function as quality entertainment and since they're released under a Creative Commons license, they will remain available and free for your personal enjoyment perpetually. The site puts a premium on quality-made recordings.
