Hemphill Branch

The Hemphill Branch Library is an innovative combination of art gallery and public library. Thanks to partnerships with the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art and the Junior League, you will find all the traditional services you expect from your neighborhood library, plus art exhibits and an ArtQuest studio. The Hemphill Branch is located on Vandalia Road, one block west of Holden. Other features include a reading garden, a family room, and a special tree house. Weekly activities include a Kids Knit! Class and the Knights of Vandalia Chess Club.

Storytimes

Kapla Block Nightkapla
Kapla Blocks are unique building toys with unlimited creation potential. Build a tall tower, a ship, a dinosaur, or an original design. Fun for all ages. Monday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 pm. 

ArtQuest Studio
The ArtQuest Studio is open even when programs are not scheduled. Children ages 8 and under should be accompanied by an adult. Program content and schedule are subject to change.

Family Night - Mondays, 6:30-8 pm 
A blend of fun family activities which may include games, movies, art or a special guest.

Art Discovery - Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 pm and Thursdays, 3:30-5:30 pm 
Drop in to begin your “Art Quest!” Explore a new art material, technique or project with a different theme each week. For all ages. 

Library Pals - Tuesdays, 3:30-4:30 pm
Featuring a wide range of educational adventures in literature and art for schoolage children.

Storytime & Art Around the Story -Thursdays, 10-11 am
Stories, songs, movement activities, and related art fun for preschoolers.

Open Studio
Occurs when no formal programming is scheduled. Enjoy self-guided art projects with
safe and simple materials. Open Studio ends one hour before library closes.

Studio Plus - Fridays, 3:30-5:30 pm, and every second and fourth Saturday, 2-5 pm
Special projects or materials are typically available, such as painting, group projects or paper crafts. 

Red, Yellow and Blue! - Fridays, 10-11 am
Parents and toddlers are invited to this art exploration appropriate for ages 2-5. Call for more information.

Family Place Workshop - Tuesdays, 10:30 am -12 noon, in March and May
Play with your child and learn about resources available to parents of children ages 1-3. Call 373-2925 for more information.

Teen Art Studio - Second Tuesday of the month, 6:30-8:00 pm. Please register.
Explore a different theme or material each month during this guided studio time.

Computer Access
The Hemphill Branch has 25 computers with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Internet access. The computers are available first-come, first-served, for one hour time slots. When your time runs out you may reserve the next available computer.  A library card is required for computer use. See the Library's computer use policies.

Internet Class
Internet classes are offered every Wednesday from 10-11:30 am.

Book Discussion

  • African American Literature Club meets the second Saturday each month at 3 pm
  • SW Mystery Group meets the second Monday each month at 2 pm
  • Benchmark Group meets every Wednesday at 4 pm
