Greensboro Public Library Foundation World of Possibilities

The purpose of the Greensboro Public Library Foundation is to provide significant additional financial assistance from non-governmental sources to enhance the facilities, services, book collections, and other materials of our community library.

Public funds provide for the library's operating budget to cover basic needs. But private support is necessary for the Library to fulfill its mission of being a strong library throughout the community. The Greensboro Public Library Foundation was formed in 2002 to meet the Library's need for private support from individuals, businesses, civic groups, and foundations.

Why does the Library need a Foundation?

Boy with bookThe Library seeks to provide the community with the most current books, materials, technology, and programming to nurture life-long learning and the joy of reading. Private support helps fund new books, updated technology, and materials and programs for new branches.

The public school system is the only community institution that serves more children than the public library. In fact, 40 percent of the books checked out at the Library are checked out for or by children.

Donations to the Foundation will increase children's materials collections and also help fund the Summer Reading Program, Mobile Library, and Family Literacy Programs. Funds will also be used to improve services for learning disabled children.

Accomplishments

Private funds were raised by the Foundation to provide enhancements at the Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch and the Hemphill Branch libraries, including murals, state of the art audio-visual equipment, specialty furniture and more.

Foundation monies are used to increase children's materials collections and help fund Summer Reading, Mobile Library, and Family Literacy programs.
