Genealogy

The Genealogy Collection is located on the second floor of the Central Library at 219 North Church Street, in downtown Greensboro. The focus of this collection is primarily on Guilford County and the Piedmont region. However, some materials covering all of North Carolina are included. States outside of NC are a secondary area of focus, based on their position in the migration patterns to and from our state.
  • Eastern NC, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Nantucket and some other locations were the primary sources of migration.
  • Western NC, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee were the primary destinations.

The Genealogy Collection includes print and microfilm materials, as well as how-to books / methodologies, directories, family histories, and genealogical records. Genealogical records are organized alphabetically— first by state, then by county. Print materials include published genealogies and a set of the pedigree charts of the Guilford County Genealogical Society.  The Library also has a North Carolina biography file, composed largely of newspaper clippings.

There are numerous records on microfilm for Guilford and all neighboring and parent counties, including Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Davidson, Forsyth, Orange, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Stokes and Surry Counties. The Library's genealogy collection also features the entire federal Census for NC, from 1790 to 1930, as well as census records for South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia to 1880.

The Greensboro Public Library’s genealogy and local history materials are primarily located in the North Carolina Collection. NC and Reference materials may not be checked out or sent through Inter-Library Loan.

A beginning class on using the Library for genealogical research is offered twice a month by the Genealogy Librarian. Classes are usually held on the third Wednesday at 7:30 pm and the third Thursday at 3 pm. Call Information Services at (336) 335-5430 for the current schedule.
