Central Library Welcomes 10 Millionth Visitor

Landmark Number Coincides With 10th Anniversary

On October 6, at about 3 pm, we were very excited to welcome our 10,000,000th visitor to Central Library. Jewel Thomas and her son Corey were checking out a sizable stack of books when they were surprised by Library Director Sandy Neerman with a bouquet of balloons and several gifts.

Her gifts included a Bicentennial Satchel, Jim Schlosser’s Book The Beat Goes On, and the One City, One Book selection for this year The Pleasure Was Mine by Tommy Hays. One happy coincidence for Jewel was that she had just inquired about The Pleasure Was Mine and we were temporarily out of the books.

In October of 1998 Central Library moved from a smaller outdated facility at the corner of Greene Street and Friendly Avenue to our current location at 219 North Church Street. In addition to much needed space the new location added modern updates like the first automated book sorting machine in the country and more computer access for customers.

“It’s hard to believe that we have been in this ‘new’ building for ten years now,” said Library Director Sandy Neerman. “The design of our Central Library and the care with which it has been maintained belies its age and we are very pleased to attract so many customers.”

With the recent addition of wireless internet access and other innovations, Central Library and all of the branches are keeping pace with the information and entertainment needs of our customers. Central Library’s welcoming design, dynamic programs and countless resources have made it a true community hub.
