An Evening with Julia McGirt Nixon A musical evening to raise awareness for the new McGirt-Horton Branch Library
GREENSBORO, NC --(April 21, 2009--To raise awareness for the new McGirt-Horton Branch Library in northeast Greensboro, the Greensboro Public Library Foundation will host an evening with Julia McGirt Nixon-the nationally acclaimed songstress. An Evening with Julia will be held Friday, May 15, 2009 at the Emerald Event Center, 2000 East Wendover Ave. in Greensboro. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Dinner and entertainment will begin promptly at 7 pm. A cash bar will be available.
Tickets may be purchased for $35 per person prior to the event at Carolina Theatre, the Booklover’s Shop at Central Library and the McGirt-Horton Branch Library. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.carolinatheatre.com.
Julia Nixon is a direct descendant of the McGirt family for whom the library branch is named. She is a former Broadway Dreamgirl and award-winning artist. Julia’s song stylings of authentic Rhythm & Blues have been her signature mark for more than two decades. Her debut solo album, Keepin’ on Track, can be heard on www.julianixon.com.
The McGirt-Horton Branch Library opened in 1986 as a one-room community reading station in Claremont Courts and later moved to 2509 Phillips Ave. In addition to typical library services, McGirt-Horton currently serves children in the area as an after-school classroom, focuses on the needs of teens with special programming, and is used as a community center for civic groups. In 2006, voters approved 3.7 million dollars to construct a new 10,000 square foot facility in the shopping center where McGirt-Horton is located. The new building is projected to open in the spring of 2010.
