Art & Literacy Quilt Unveiled At Hemphill Library
Project Honors Long-time Library Benefactor William Hemphill

GREENSBORO, NC -- The Hemphill Library recently unveiled its Art & Literacy Quilt in honor of library advocate and benefactor William Hemphill. Thanks to a generous grant from the Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation, artist Peg Gignoux and author Susie Wilde spent eight weeks at the Hemphill Library helping children and teens write an original story titled “Tell Me A Patch.” The story was then illustrated by creating a colorful story quilt composed of myriad fabrics and patterns. Sixty library patrons of all ages and backgrounds were involved in the project. The Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation provided funding for this program to honor former board member William Hemphill.

The Hemphill Library, in partnership with the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art, is dedicated to promoting literacy through unique arts-based programming and celebrating the rich, cultural diversity of the neighborhood it serves. The quilt will be framed and permanently displayed at the branch as a testament to Hemphill’s commitment to literacy and lifelong learning.
