Poet Marilyn Nelson Coming to Greensboro
GREENSBORO, NC (March 26, 2010)--To celebrate National Poetry Month and Poetry GSO the Greensboro Public Library is bringing award-winning poet Marilyn Nelson to Greensboro on Sunday, April 18, at 3 pm at the Greensboro Historical Museum, 130 Summit Ave.
Nelson is the author or translator of twelve books and three chapbooks. Her newest book of poetry, "Sweethearts of Rhythm," was released in 2009. The book is about a famous female-integrated swing band that toured the US, breaking attendance records from 1937 to 1946.
Nelson was born in Cleveland and came of age during the Civil Rights era. Her books include "The Fields of Praise: New and Selected Poems," "The Homeplace" and many other award-winning titles. Since 1978 she has taught at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where she is a professor of English.
