Event Raises Over $100,000 For Library
Volunteers Organize Trivia Championship Fundraiser

GREENSBORO, NC  – (December 3, 2008)  – The inaugural Smarty Pants Soirée and Team Trivia Championship was held at Revolution Mill in November. Organized by community volunteers to benefit children’s services at the Greensboro Public Library, the evening was a resounding success.

Businesses, organizations and individuals sponsored tables or teams to compete in the trivia contest. New York radio talk show host Doug Grunther provided the questions and was emcee for the contest. Between rounds, various donated items were auctioned with proceeds going to the Library.

Event chairs included Lisa Bullock, Lotta Dick, Caroline Jones, Betsy Oakley, Emilie Samet and Meredith Scott. Catering was provided by Exclamations Catering and promotional materials were created by Boulton Advertising + Promotions.

The trivia contest winning team was the Nerd Herd sponsored by Dick Broadcasting. Members of the team included radio personalities Chris Kelly, Chris Demm, Diedre James, Dave Aiken and Jack Murphy. Also on the team were WFMY Meteorologist Eric Chilton, Phil Novak and Rob Cook.

Second place in the contest was the Library’s own team, the Annoyers. Members included staff from Central Library’s information services and other departments.

Organizers plan to make this an annual event to benefit children’s services and programs at the Greensboro Public Library. Contributions from this year’s event will be used to raise the literacy level of  children in the community; provide funding for the Hemphill Branch’s art-based literacy programs; expand the “Every Child Ready to Read” workshops for low-income and Latino parents; and to enrich the children’s area at the new McGirt-Horton Branch facility.
