Program Description:
Camp Joy is a summer day camp for ages 5 and older with special needs, including but not limited to developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, and visual and hearing impairments. The camp is a program of the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department, provided through the MainStream Resources Unit.

Camp Joy offers two three-week sessions for individuals with developmental disabilities and a one-week session for individuals with physical disabilities. Facilities include six cabins, a multipurpose building, an arts and crafts shelter, a playground, and a pool. Campers also have access to the Hagan-Stone Park facilities, which include playgrounds and nature trails. Camp Joy offers a wide variety of activities, including arts and crafts, music, swimming, sports, and outdoor activities. Each summer, the camp hosts talent shows, dances, movie days, and theme weeks, such as Holiday Week, Green Week and Sports Week.

The camp has a caring and committed staff that helps make it successful. A nurse is on duty at all times. The nurse’s duties include distribution of medication and calling parents regarding any medical problems that may arrive. A trained staff of counselors and instructors, supervised by a camp director and an assistant director, provide quality instruction and group supervision to campers. We welcome campers that may need personal one-on-one attention and their private assistants that accompany them (one-on-one staff is not provided by Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department). In addition to approximately 22 staff members, the camp receives assistance from a host of volunteers to create long-lasting memories.

Each camper must have a completed registration form including medical information, parental consent, transportation and discipline forms. Parents or guardians are responsible for providing transportation for the camper to either a van stop or Camp Joy. Campers are required to bring their lunches, including a beverage that is clearly labeled for proper identification. Campers must also bring a towel and swimsuit clearly labeled for proper identification.

For more information about Camp Joy, contact the MainStream Resources Unit office of Greensboro Parks & Recreation at 336-373-2735.
