Union Cemetery
:
Union Cemetery is Greensboro's oldest African American cemetery. It was founded in the 1880s by the congregations of St. James Presbyterian Church, St. Matthews Methodist Church and Providence Baptist Church for the burial of black citizens in Greensboro. In 1993, the cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. Although burials have not taken place in the cemetery since the early 1900s, it remains the final resting place of many Greensboro residents and an important historic site.
