Growing, the Green Way 2008

“Growing, the Green Way” is an environmental education series, co-sponsored by Greensboro Parks and Recreation, Bur-Mil Park, the NC Cooperative Extension Service, and Greensboro Beautiful, Inc. Our mission is to offer a broad spectrum of environmental classes that help to save time and money while expanding your knowledge of landscaping and gardening. Classes are free unless otherwise noted.
Classes will be held at three regular locations. Class size is limited to 30 people at the Greensboro Arboretum Education Building and the Bur-Mil Park Wildlife Education Center, so make your reservations early.

Landscaping That Makes Cents
Do more with less. Save time and money while creating a beautiful landscape in a limited space by making smart choices. Discussions will include smart choices and challenges facing gardeners in selecting and growing plants that can tolerate difficult soil, shade and confined space.

Be Healthy – Grow What You Eat
There’s nothing like that first ripe tomato from the garden. Experience the most rewarding type of gardening – growing your own vegetables and herbs. In this course we will look at designing an efficient, space saving raised bed, learn about growing conditions and how to prepare soil, selection of vegetable varieties for the Piedmont, and how to identify and control insects and diseases with an organic approach.

Water Wise Landscaping
Southern gardens are not immune to drought conditions. Recent heat and drought have created numerous challenges for home gardeners. Local watering restrictions add to the frustration of gardening during summers with a lack of rain. The good news is that there are a number of strategies we can employ to continue to garden successfully through dry times.

Some Like it Hot: Water Wise Plants
Don’t fret, there’s no reason to give up on a gorgeous and thriving garden while conserving water! Plenty of plants can take the heat and drought in stride. Join us and learn about some great drought tolerant plants and techniques to keep your garden green and growing all summer long.

Containers – Mixing It Up $20.00/person/container
We all could use a container arrangement with a beautiful seasonal display to brighten our summer garden. But there’s spring, fall and winter to think of as well. Learn tips on the best plants for containers as you create an innovative container of plants for that special place around your home.

Perennials with Pizzazz
Whether you lean towards the English Cottage Garden design, a colorful, vibrant cutting garden, or a perennial garden in subdued tones of white and blue, you will come away with fresh ideas to start anew or to refurbish an existing perennial garden.
