Basic Rules
Absences
Volunteers who know they will be absent or late should notify their supervisor or the volunteer coordinator as soon as possible.
Accidents or Injuries
If you are injured, you should immediately contact any staff available for assistance. Most staff members have radios or cell phones and can contact Administrative Services or the appropriate authorities as necessary. All facilities have an Operations Manual that addresses the Departmental policies.
Dress Code
Volunteers should be dressed in a presentable and appropriate fashion. Uniforms are not provided, but volunteers are asked to dress for safety and comfort while still meeting dress code requirements. Depending on the volunteer assignment, denim jeans or other comfortable slacks are appropriate, while stretch pants, sweat pants or leggings are inappropriate. Shorts are permitted, but short shorts or cutoffs are inappropriate. Please do not wear tank tops or tube tops. In most instances, closed-toe shoes are required. Hats and sunglasses are encouraged when the volunteer assignment is outdoors. Please contact your supervisor for more specific requirements.
Equipment
The Parks and Recreation Department generally provides the necessary tools, safety equipment and supplies for the volunteer assignment unless specified in the beginning of the assignment. If there are questions, see the supervisor.
Policies
All volunteers are required to follow the policies set forth by the City of Greensboro and the Parks and Recreation Department. These policies address Equal Opportunity, Substance Abuse, Sexual Harassment, Liability, and Safety and Security Procedures.
Resignation
To end a volunteer commitment, the volunteer must notify his or her supervisor, preferably in writing, giving the effective date of resignation. The Parks and Recreation Termination Policy outlines the terms of dismissal.
Supervision and Evaluation
The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department provides supervision and training to volunteers in all areas. Many volunteers are monitored daily as they work under the direct supervision of Departmental personnel. Other volunteers work independently and meet with their supervisors on a pre-determined basis. Supervisors make site visits regularly to monitor job performance.
At the time of appointment, volunteers must attend orientation sessions, during which they receive a copy of the Volunteer Manual and training in the specifics of their daily functions and safety procedures. Additional training is ongoing and provided relative to the volunteer's duties and responsibilities as necessary.
Volunteer progress and performance is discussed and evaluated during regular conferences. Any successes, difficulties, suggestions, or questions are reviewed and/or resolved at this time. The volunteer is encouraged to request meetings when concerns or situations arise.
