Greensboro Playwrights' Forum
The Greensboro Playwrights' Forum was founded in 1993 as part of the ongoing and growing programs of the City Arts Drama Center. Its mission is to aid playwrights of the Piedmont Triad and North Carolina in getting published or produced through contacts, marketing, and improving their skill as dramatic writers.
Meetings
Monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month starting at 7 pm at the Greensboro Cultural Center, located at 200 N. Davie St. Our meetings are free and open to the public. Each meeting we read the monthly writing assignment followed by plays being worked on by area playwrights. Annual membership dues are $25.
Membership
Membership in the Greensboro Playwrights' Forum is only $25 per year and this allows you full access to all our Wednesday Workshops. You are also eligible to submit scripts for consideration in the Evening of Short Plays, North Carolina New Play Project (regardless of residency status) and the Showcase Reading Series. To join, fill out a membership form and bring it to the next Wednesday workshop or place it in the mail.
Young Playwrights (formerly the Pegasus Project)
Young Playwrights is the youth outreach program of the Greensboro Playwrights' Forum. Anyone in grades four through nine is encouraged to participate as an actor or playwright. Open meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of every month from 5-6:30 pm at the Greensboro Cultural Center. For more information call 335-6426 or e-mail us.
Directors' Laboratory
On the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Greensboro Cultural Center, 7-9 pm, directors take on a short script. Each script is assigned to three directors who have 15 minutes to direct it. Playwrights get to see multiple interpretations of their script and get a better feel for what directors do. Actors are also put through their paces as they receive three different "rehearsals." Scripts or cuttings of scripts should be about five to eight pages in standard format. Directors and playwrights must be members of the Playwrights' Forum to participate. Actors and observers may participate at no cost. Annual membership dues are $25.
Improv Club
From 7-9 pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Greensboro Cultural Center, actors and playwrights are invited to participate in an informal evening of improv theatre games. No need to RSVP, just show up and share your favorite game with us or learn a few new ones. Improv Club is open to all members of the Greensboro Playwrights' Forum.
North Carolina New Play Project
The Greensboro Playwrights' Forum hosts the annual North Carolina New Play Project with a generous donation from the Mark Gilbert Estate. Scripts by North Carolina resident and student playwrights are accepted annually, June 1 through August 15.
Evening of Short Plays
Members are encouraged to submit short plays for the biannual Evening of Short Plays. Deadlines are July 15 and November 15. We also have an Evening of Horror Plays every October. Deadline for those plays is May 15.
Showcase Reading Series
The Greensboro Playwrights' Forum showcases longer works created by its member playwrights through the Showcase Reading Series. Stage readings of these works are presented on an as needed basis each year at our Studio Theatre or other local venues, such as coffee houses and art galleries.
Dramatists' Playground
The Forum offers a unique opportunity for actors and playwrights to participate in the collaboration of crafting one play in one day. Actors and playwrights work from 10 am to 8 pm to develop, script, and rehearse a truly original play on one Saturday in August. The Dramatists' Playground has become one of the forum's most exciting and daring programs for both the participants and audience. This is a free event.
