North Carolina New Play Project Guidelines
Guidelines for the 2012 North Carolina New Play Project:
Award: 1. Selected script(s) will receive a workshop production by the 3rd Stage Theatre Company. 2. A video of the production, a copy of the playbill and copy of the review(s) by the media will be presented to the playwright(s). 3. The Mark Gilbert Award totaling $500 will be given to the selected playwright(s).
Adjudication: 1. A play selection committee appointed by City Arts and the Greensboro Playwrights' Forum will select the play(s) to be produced. 2. Decisions of the selection committee are final, and the committee reserves the right to not select a new play. 3. Announcement of the selected play(s) will be January 1, 2012. (subject to change)
Rules for Submission: 1. Only plays or musicals by North Carolina residents and students will be considered. Members of the Greensboro Playwrights' Forum who reside outside NC may also submit their play or musical. 2. The playwright may submit up to two full-length plays or three one-acts (30 pages or more). No more than three plays may be submitted. Please, no 10-minute plays. 3. Manuscripts should be an original play (no adaptations) and unpublished. 4. Submissions that have received an Equity production are not eligible. If previously produced, please include a past production history. 5. Scripts should be the sole property of the author(s) with no royalty or copyright infringements. 6. Scripts with simpler sets and smaller casts may be given preference. 7. No nudity. 8. Standard stage play script form should be used. (screenplay format is not acceptable) 9. The playwright must submit one or two excellent quality typed copies. 10. Only typed, legible and bound scripts will be considered. 11. Receipt of all scripts will be acknowledged by mail if author includes a self addressed stamped postcard. 12. Scripts will not be returned. Scripts not selected will be recycled. Neither City Arts nor the Greensboro Playwrights’ Forum assumes responsibility for loss, damage or return of scripts. 13. Playwrights should be available to attend some rehearsals and at least one production. Rehearsals will be scheduled from April to May 2012. Performance dates will be announced later. 14. 17. Scripts may be submitted electronically under the following conditions: a) Plays must be submitted in MS Word (.doc), Rich Text Format (.rtf) or Adobe Acrobat (.pdf). b) Please keep fonts to Times New Roman, Courier or Arial and avoid manual page breaks. c) Please indicate that you are submitting the play for the NC New Play Project; this gives us permission to print and distribute your play for the purposes of the NC New Play Project. d) Plays may also be e-mailed to us. 18. You are encouraged to list the following on page 2: a) Character breakdown b) Scene breakdown c) Synopsis 19. Musical submissions must include the sheet music and a CD recording of the music. 20. Workshop History: 1. This will be the 19th Annual NC New Play Project sponsored by the Greensboro Playwrights' Forum. 2. The performances will be held in the City Arts Studio Theatre at the Greensboro Cultural Center (200 N. Davie Street). 3. Available seating for each performance is approximately 100. 4. Actors and technicians are recruited on a volunteer basis. 5. Non-traditional casting will be used.
The Greensboro Playwrights' Forum is a program of the City Arts Division of the City of Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. The Parks and Recreation Department's programs and facilities are open to all citizens free of discrimination on the basis of race, religion, sex, national origin, age or handicap.
