Youth Citizen's Police Academy (YCPA)
The Youth Citizen’s Police Academy (YCPA) is a program of the Greensboro Youth Council (GYC) and the Greensboro Police Department. The program is a week-long summer event designed to give participants a chance to gain insight into solving issues facing teenagers and learn about police operations. There are five sessions on a variety of topics that pertain to careers in law enforcement. All interested high school students may apply. Please note this is not a "scared straight" program.
Session topics include:
- Mechanics of Arrest & Defense Tactics
- Police Department’s Crime Scene Lab
- Drugs in the Community & Canine Unit Demonstration
- Jail Tour
- SWAT Team
- Detectives, Investigations & Negotiations
- Underwater Rescue & Bomb Squad Demonstration
- Tour 911 Communications Center
- Firing Range Tour
Eligibility:
- You must be a sophomore, junior or senior enrolled in a public or private school or home school in Guilford County.
- Submit the YCPA application.
- Submit one letter of recommendation.
Requirements:
Upon acceptance into the program, you must:
- Pay a $35 fee to cover program costs.
- Attend all five sessions.
- Attend the YCPA Awards Night.
