Downtown Area Consolidated Plan

City Council Public Hearing -- Tuesday, January 18
A public hearing on the final draft of the Downtown Area Consolidated Plan takes place before City Council on Tuesday, January 18, in Council Chamber of the Melvin Municipal Office Building, 300 W. Washington St. The Downtown Area Consolidated Plan provides long-term guidance for downtown and outlines short- and medium- term priorities.

The Plan demonstrates Downtown’s benefit to the economy and all neighborhoods of Greensboro, protects and enhances the character of our community, and works to make government better and more effective.Questions may be addressed to Mike Kirkman at 373-4649.

Early in 2009, the City Council and County Commissioners adopted resolutions to partner with the County, Downtown Greensboro Inc. and Action Greensboro to develop the Downtown Area Consolidated Plan. Four groups are leading the process, with funding provided entirely by the private sector.

The purpose of this project was to:
  • Examine past plans for downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods.
  • Identify unfinished projects.
  • Determine the usefulness of remaining projects.
  • Develop an implementation schedule to get these remaining things accomplished.

This effort also examined:

  • How downtown can better connect with other nearby economic centers on the edge of the center city, such as Moses Cone Hospital to the north, North Carolina A&T State University and Bennett College to the east, and UNCG and Greensboro College to the west.
  • How downtown can better connect to and with all the surrounding neighborhoods including Fisher Park, College Hill, Aycock, Old Asheboro, and others.

As this effort built upon previous planning efforts, the Downtown Area Consolidated Plan emphasizes downtown's connections to adjacent neighborhoods and nearby economic centers in addition to the downtown area itself. This effort was also lead by two citizen teams representing a variety of downtown, neighborhood, and economic center interests.
