Boards and Commissions The Planning Department serves as the liaison to the Advisory Commission on Trees, Board of Adjustment, Planning Board, and Zoning Commission. Each board or commission is established to perform special, limited functions.
The City Council appoints qualified citizens to serve on the following City boards and commissions for a three year term, not to exceed two consecutive terms. Meetings take place in the Council Chamber of the Melvin Municipal Office Building, 300 West Washington Street.
Advisory Commission on TreesThe Greensboro Advisory Commission reviews the Tree Preservation and Landscape Ordinances and advises staff on appropriate changes to the text. The Commission also provides professional expertise for developing program goals and policies for the Greensboro Urban Forestry Program.
Board of AdjustmentThe Greensboro Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial body responsible for hearing and deciding appeals, variance requests, special exceptions, and interpretations of the zoning regulations.
Planning BoardThe Greensboro Planning Board studies the needs and resources of Greensboro and plans for its appropriate development. This includes reviewing the text of the Development Ordinance and advising City Council on measures related to comprehensive planning.
Zoning CommissionThe Greensboro Zoning Commission hears and decides requests for amendments to the City's official Zoning Map. The duties of the Commission include rezoning properties, approving Conditional Zoning Districts, issuing Special Use Permits, and recommending overlay districts.
