Arbor Day Program
2010 Arbor Day Celebration takes place at 3:30 pm Wednesday, March 24, on the Greenway Trail approximately 700 feet west of its intersection with S. Elm-Eugene St. The event includes a ceremonial tree planting in conjunction with the grand opening of Phase I of the Downtown Greenway. Also, 200 White Oak seedlings will be given away at April 10's Earth Day Fair held from 1-5 pm at the Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Library, 1420 Price Park Rd.
The first Arbor Day took place April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. Julius Sterling Morton, credited with its conception, felt that a state-wide tree planting would beautify the state and improve its economy. Nebraska's first Arbor Day was a huge success with more than a million trees planted. Soon, other states followed and today Arbor Day is celebrated in all 50 states. In 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day.
In Greensboro, Arbor Day is celebrated on the third Friday of March due to our milder climate. Celebrating Arbor Day is a great way to help restore our City's tree canopy. It also provides an opportunity all residents to become aware of the importance of trees and the benefits they provide to our quality of life.
