NeighborWoods Event Planned in Fisher Park Neighborhood Volunteers welcomed to help plant trees
GREENSBORO, NC – (September 4, 2009) – The City of Greensboro, in collaboration with Greensboro Beautiful and the Fisher Park Neighborhood Association, will hold the 2009 NeighborWoods Tree Planting event on Saturday, November 7, at 9 am. More than 150 volunteers including Boy and Girl Scout troops, students, residents and church groups will be on hand to plant trees throughout the Fisher Park neighborhood to help restore tree cover lost during storms and development.
The purpose of the program is to educate the community on the importance of trees and the role they play in improving air and water quality, reducing energy costs, increasing real estate values, providing wildlife habitat, and creating opportunities for residents to relax and enjoy nature. “Our trees help to define Greensboro and improve the quality of life throughout our community,” said Mike Cusimano, Urban Forester for the City of Greensboro.
Funding for this year’s program has been made possible by a generous grant from American Express and a donation of mulch from the City of Greensboro’s Water Resources Department. Additional support will be provided by Dunlap Lawn Service Inc. to auger holes for trees to be planted on private property.
Development and implementation of this year’s program included the collaborative efforts of Greensboro Beautiful, the City of Greensboro Planning, Parks & Recreation and Field Operations departments, the Fisher Park Neighborhood Association, and the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Guilford County.
Individuals, groups, clubs and organizations wishing to volunteer to help plant trees can do so by contacting Mary Sertell, Urban Designer for the City of Greensboro, at 336-373-4769. For more information regarding the NeighborWoods program, contact Mike Cusimano at 336-373-2150.
