City to Celebrate Arbor Day on March 19 Event coincides with grand opening of Downtown Greenway
GREENSBORO, NC (March 2, 2010) – Mayor William H. Knight has proclaimed Friday, March 19, as Arbor Day in Greensboro.
To celebrate the annual event, which encourages residents to protect existing trees and plant new ones, the City of Greensboro will hold a tree planting ceremony in conjunction with the grand opening of Phase I of the Downtown Greenway, a 4.2-mile multi-use trail that loops around downtown Greensboro. The event will take place at 3:30 pm Wednesday, March 24, near the two large trees at the midway point on the Greenway (approximately 700 feet west from South Eugene Street).
In addition, on Saturday, April 10, from 1-5 pm, Greensboro Beautiful Inc. will give away 200 White Oak seedlings at the Earth Day Fair held at the Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Library, 1420 Price Park Rd.
For the past 19 years, Greensboro has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Mayor Knight “encourages all residents to help care for our trees and woodlands, support the City’s Community Forestry Program, and observe Arbor Day by planting trees to promote the well-being of present and future generations.”
This year's Arbor Day celebration is sponsored by the City’s Urban Forestry Program, the Downtown Greenway, Greensboro Beautiful Inc., the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Guilford County, and Duke Energy.
