Public Kickoff
Public kickoff meetingThank you to everyone who participated in the Downtown Design Public Kickoff Meeting on April 12. The "downtown visionaries" who were present reviewed some of downtown's streets and explained the strengths and weaknesses of existing downtown design. Participants also discussed the types of buildings they would like to see in downtown using an extensive photo library (see what these buildings look like) and interconnecting building blocks.

City staff members are compiling a report with the comments from the meeting. Here is some of the information compiled from the meeting:

  • Building block infill activity. Participants constructed infill projects on vacant and underutilized downtown sites, using color coded building blocks (red = office, blue = hospitality, green = retail, orange = detached residential, yellow = attached residential, white = institutional/ governmental, black = auto/ service/ parking). Participants were asked to pay special attention to the height, mass and scale of their infill buildings and their relationship to downtown's existing structures.
  • Picture mapping activity with public comments. Participants made comments on some of downtown's existing buildings, highlighting design strengths and weaknesses. They also pinned images from a photo library of what they thought would be well designed additions to downtown. To review the comments, contact the Planning Department.
  • Dot map activity. Participants placed sticky dots on different areas of downtown where they 1) liked to go, 2) never go, 3) felt their favorite buildings were, or 4) felt a new building should go.
