Downtown Streetscape
Many sidewalks and streets in downtown Greensboro are places of excitement, energy, and visual interest. Some have storefronts and shops, some have restaurants and sidewalk cafes, some have trees and parks, and some have office buildings and historic sites. But what make a great street? What makes a street a place to see or be seen?
There is no definitive answer, but combining certain elements of design and safety can help create streets that add character and vitality to our city.
The Downtown Streetscape Committee is a joint effort between stakeholders and City staff to proactively address opportunities and challenges that are unique to downtown development. The group has worked together for nearly two years to create the Downtown Streetscape Recommendations (draft).
Building on the successes of streetscape (or the area between a building's face and the curb) improvements on Elm and Greene streets, the recommendations help designers, consultants, and developers with projects in the area. The general study area was south of Fisher Avenue, north of Bragg Street, west of Murrow Boulevard, and east of Spring Street.
Recognizing that the variety of sidewalks in downtown have different personalities, widths, and levels of use, the recommendations are designed to create a cohesive network of sidewalks throughout the area. Linking safe, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks all over downtown increases the walkability of our community and helps to define our unique sense of place.
