Functions

Homicide

This squad investigates homicides, suicides, non-motor vehicle accidental deaths, and all other unattended death cases. This squad works closely with the Medical Examiner and the Guilford County District Attorney’s Office in prosecuting Greensboro’s most serious cases. Also, one Special Assignment Detective is federally sworn and is assigned full time to the United States Marshal’s Violent Fugitive Task Force. This squad also has the Multiple Offender Coordinator.

Robbery

This squad investigates all robberies that occur within the city. This includes the robberies of businesses and individuals. This squad also investigates all robberies of banks and other financial institutions in cooperation with the FBI.

Fraud

This squad investigates all crimes of a fraudulent nature including fraud, forgery and false pretenses. The squad also has two detectives assigned to computer forensics investigations. Most squad members are also federally deputized and participate in the US Secret Service Financial Crimes Task Force. In addition, this squad also has the pawnshop detail, polygraph operator and the arson investigator assigned. The arson investigator works closely with the Greensboro Fire Department in the investigation of arsons and suspicious fires.

Juvenile Services

This squad investigates offenses that are committed by or against juveniles. This includes the investigation of child abuse and neglect and the investigation of delinquent children. This squad works very closely with the Juvenile Court Counselors, Department of Social Services and the Guilford County Schools. Detectives on this squad are specially trained to interview children in these sensitive cases.

Special Victims Unit

This squad investigates a wide variety of violent crimes. This includes assaults, sex offenses and adult missing persons cases. The squad also investigates complaints of abuse against the elderly.

 Auto Squad

 This squad investigates thefts, larcenies and vandalisms of automobiles in Greensboro.


Commercial Property Crimes

This squad investigates burglaries, larcenies and vandalisms of businesses in Greensboro. The pawnshop personnel are also assigned to this squad.

 Residential Property Crimes

 This squad investigates burglaries, larcenies and vandalisms of residences in Greensboro.

Crime Stoppers

The Crime Stoppers unit coordinates information from the Crime Stoppers telephone line to the appropriate investigative unit. This unit is a major investigative support unit and has provided information that has led to the recovery of over $10 million in property and drugs. This unit is a nationally recognized award winner.
