Get Informed...Spring / Summer Safety Tips With warm weather upon us, now is the time of year we come out of hibernation to enjoy the sunshine and great outdoors. While we enjoy the nice weather and warm temperatures, it’s important to remember that there's also an unpleasant aspect of life to contend with—the risk of crime.
The Greensboro Police Department offers the following safety tips to help you reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime this spring and summer:
When at home…
- Don’t go to sleep with your windows open. Always close and lock them when you’re asleep or away from home.
- Keep your doors locked at all times. Never give an intruder an opportunity.
- Be cautious of solicitors or contractors who offer to repair your home at a very significant discount.
- Don't allow solicitors into your home; don’t even open the door. Greet them through a closed, locked door and ask for their permit to solicit. Call police if you feel it's necessary.
When working in the yard…
- Always lock your home’s doors and windows when you’re outside.
- Don’t play music too loud. Remain alert so no one sneaks up on you.
- Never leave your garage door open and unattended. Keep it closed and locked.
- Once you’re done with your yard work, secure all lawn and gardening equipment in your garage.
- Remember to record your power tools' serial numbers and engrave other tools with your NC driver’s license number.
When at the park or other public places…

- Stay alert at all times and be aware of your surroundings.
- Stay in well-lighted areas. Unlit parks and trails can be hiding places for people looking to commit crimes.
- Beware of people lurking around recreation areas taking pictures or engaging in other suspicious activity. Call police immediately if you notice something unusual.
- Keep a close eye on your children. Never give a predator an opportunity to take advantage of your children.
- Bring only the items that you need and carry small amounts of cash. This way if your wallet or purse is stolen, a thief won’t have access to your credit cards or other valuable items.
- Keep your personal items on you and don't leave them out in the open.
When on vacation…
- Make sure your home is securely locked.
- Don't let mail or newspapers pile up in your mailbox or on your porch. This is a clear sign to criminals that you're away from home. Postpone newspaper deliveries and ask the post office to hold your mail until you return.
- Inform trusted neighbors of your absence so they can be extra alert of suspicious people.
- Leave a key with someone you trust so he or she can periodically inspect your home. Also, leave emergency contact numbers with someone in case you’re needed while you’re away.
- Don't leave door keys under flower pots or doormats, inside an unlocked mailbox, over the doorway or in other obvious places.
- Use timers to turn lights and radio / television on and off at appropriate times, so it appears as if someone is home.
- Arrange for lawn care and have someone remove advertising circulars and other debris from your yard regularly.
- If you find a door or window has been forced or broken while you were away, do not enter your house because the criminal may still be inside. Call the police immediately.
- Do not touch anything or clean up if you think someone has tried to break into your house. Preserve the scene until police inspect for evidence.
Other important safety reminders…

- Become active in your area’s Community Watch program. If you don’t have one, consider starting a program for your neighborhood.
- Report any suspicious activity to Guilford Metro 9-1-1’s non-emergency line at 336-373-2222. For emergencies, call 9-1-1.
- Do not keep valuables in your vehicle. If you must, then conceal them or put them in your trunk.
- Remember to record the serial numbers of electronics, power tools, bicycles and other valuables.
