Did You Know...

  • Studies have shown that using a helmet can reduce head injuries up to 85 percent.
  • Each year, more than 500,000 people in the US are treated in emergency rooms, and more than 700 people die as a result of bicycle-related injuries (obtained from National Center for Injury and Prevention Control).
  • Children are at particularly high risk for bicycle-related injuries. In 2001, children 15 years and younger accounted for 59 percent of all bicycle-related injuries seen in US emergency rooms. (Obtained from National Center for Injury and Prevention Control)

What You Can Do...

  • Wear a helmet. Look for helmets with a label stating they are recommended by either the American National Standards Institute or the Snell Memorial Foundation.
  • Wear light-colored, close-fitting clothing.
  • Teach children to obey the rules of the road.
  • Teach children to look left-right-left and to walk the bike across busy streets.
  • Make sure the bike has front and rear reflectors.
  • Make sure the bike is adjusted properly and all parts are secure and working.Bike Patrol Officers
  • Make sure the handlebars are firmly in place and turn easily.
  • Check tires for pressure, bulges and cracks.
  • Make sure children do not show off on their bikes.
