Note: Educational achievement is recognized through bonuses that are paid in three installments over the first 40 weeks as a Police Officer 1. The first of these payments is made on the first payday following the beginning of the Police Academy. Currently these bonuses total: $2,500 for AA College degree ($500, $500, $1,500), and $5,000 for BA College degree ($1,000, $1,000, $3,000).
Benefits
- Paid Vacation: Employees earn vacation at the rate of 12 days per year for the first three years of service. For employees with four or more years of continuous service, annual leave is accrued at a greater rate.
- Paid Holidays: Ten holidays are recognized annually.
- Paid Sick Leave: Employees earn 12 days sick leave per year. They may be accumulated without limit.
- Insurance: Comprehensive medical hospitalization and life insurance is provided at a nominal or at no cost to employees. These benefits are available for the employees' dependents at a reduced rate. The employee may also choose from one other program involving some cost sharing by the employee.
- Military Leave: Two calendar weeks per year with half pay by payroll deduction is granted to employees on active duty.
- Dental Assistance: Employees are provided free coverage to assist with some dental expenses. Dependents may be covered at the employee's expense.
- Credit Union: All employees may join the Greensboro Municipal Credit Union.
- Retirement Program: The retirement system offers a program of security for employees to meet the needs of retirement or disability. Both the employees and the City contribute to this system. If you choose to terminate before qualifying for retirement benefits, your contributions will be refunded upon application.
- Uniforms: All uniforms and equipment are furnished by the City, including the .40-caliber Beretta, 800 MHz radio system, bulletproof vest, Clarino leather gear, foul weather gear, and more.
- Residence: Entry level employees may live in any county in North Carolina.
- Annuity Program: Once sworn, the City contributes 5 percent of salary to a state-sponsored 401-K plan.
- Longevity: After five years of continuous service, employees receive a longevity payment of 1 percent of annual salary. The percentage increases in five-year increments to a maximum of 4.75 percent of salary for 20 or more years of service.
