Basic Requirements
Police Trainee To be considered for employment as a Greensboro police officer, you must meet the following qualifications:
- High school graduate or GED certificate
- Must not have committed or been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor
- Able to meet the physically demanding requirements of the job
- Be a United States citizen
- Have or be able to obtain a valid North Carolina driver's license
- Be at least 21 years old upon completion of the Police Academy
The Police trainee employment procedure is a multi-step process. An applicant must pass each step in sequential order to progress to the next step. An applicant who misses a scheduled appointment (unless a verified emergency) will be withdrawn from any further consideration.
Qualified individu als begin with 26 weeks of academy training in areas such as law, human relations, first aid, firearms, driver training, defensive tactics, and modern law enforcement techniques. Sworn status is conferred upon completion of the Academy.
New officers receive an additional 14 weeks of field training followed by assignment to one of four districts of the Field Operations Bureau. Officers patrol a designated area of the City and are responsible for the prevention of crime, investigation of offenses, a nd apprehension of violators. The officer must also respond to automobile accidents, crimes in progress and other emergency situations and is required to exercise judgment and initiative in handling both routine and complex problems.
Promotion to Police Officer II is possible after three years. Officers in this classification are eligible for additional career opportunities, including assignment to specialized units and/or appointment to Police Corporal positions. Supervisory promotions can begin after four years of service as an officer.
Lateral Police Officer To be considered for employment as a police officer seeking to make a lateral move into the Greensboro Police Department, current law enforcement officers must meet the following qualifications:
- Must possess a current Law Enforcement Certification by the State of North Carolina and must have been employed in a full-time law enforcement capacity for a minimum of 24 months in the preceding 30 month period (at time application is received).The totality of the individual's law enforcement period will be considered.
- Must have served a minimum of two years in a civilian governmental law enforcement assignment
- Must meet all of the current standards for a police officer applicant
- Must complete all parts of the hiring process as established by the department
- Must be evaluated and recommended for employment by the department's selection committee
- Greensboro Police Reserve Officers who have completed the Greensboro Police Basic Introductory Course (PBIC) and maintain continuous certification are eligible for reinstatement at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
- Out-of-state officers who meet all of the aforementioned requirements can be eligible for lateral entry to the rank of Police Officer I, but must complete the Greensboro Police Department PBIC in its entirety and all required field-training components.
- Former Greensboro Police Officers who have not been separated from the agency for more than one year are eligible for reinstatement, but must successfully complete all portions of the employment process
Out-of-state officers who meet all of the aforementioned requirements do not qualify for the Lateral Entry Program, however, shall be compensated for previous experience upon employment. They must complete the Greensboro Police Department PBIC in its entirety and all field-training components.
All in-state applicants who qualify for the Lateral Entry Program will be hired as a Police Officer I, beginning year three for training and compensation purposes.

Training Requirements for Lateral Police Officer
Applicants selected for employment under the Lateral Entry Program are required to successfully complete an academy training program as prescribed by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
Those who successfully complete the academy program are required to successfully complete a Police Training Officer (PTO) Program and the Police Officer II Academy, as established by the Department. Length and content of field training may vary based on the qualifications and experience of individual officers.
In all cases, failure to successfully complete the PTO program and the Police Officer II Academy is grounds for termination. While participating in the PTO program, lateral entry officers must satisfy the standards which apply to other police officers.
Each person employed under the Lateral Enty Program is required to meet the one year probationary standards of the Department for sworn members. Non-Sworn Positions The Greensboro Police Department also offers opportunities for non-sworn personnel. Civilian positions are filled as needed throughout the year.
