National Night Out

National Night Out (NNO) takes place the first Tuesday in August. This unique crime and drug prevention event is sponsored locally by the Greensboro Police Department. The department has received 10 national awards from the NATW based on community participation. Greensboro is one of several NC cities to be recognized. More than 100 neighborhoods participate in this crime prevention event. National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, neighborhoods in Greensboro will celebrate NNO in a variety of events and activities such as: block parties, cookouts, visits from local police and fire departments, parades, flashlight walks, contests, and youth programs. NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive, and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our quest for safer communities and a safer nation.
The GPD is a local sponsor of NNO. Last year more than 115 neighborhood events took place throughout the city.
Greensboro was one of 26 cities nationwide with a population of between 100,000 – 299,999 to be recognized nationally for its support of NNO. The City and department have been recognized 11 years, ten consecutive years since 1993. This accomplishment would not be possible without the support of concerned citizens.
