Solving Cold Cases with DNA
In January 2008, the Greensboro Police Department received $310,800 in federal grant funds from the Department of Justice to fund a program developed by our department called “Solving Cold Cases with DNA." The department will review violent unsolved criminal cases in Greensboro that have the potential of having DNA evidence. The funding is to be used for overtime, training and travel.
The Greensboro Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division currently has 84 homicides dating back to 1969, as well as rapes and serious aggravated assaults that remain unsolved. Cases with potential DNA evidence will be thoroughly reviewed and updated with information on witnesses, victims and anyone with knowledge about the crimes. A detailed step-by-step procedural guideline for personnel involved has been established and DNA testing will be conducted by the NC State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
"Solving Cold Cases with DNA" is supported by the Guilford County District Attorney, Guilford County Medical Examiner, Moses Cone Health System, and the SBI Crime Laboratory.
The Featured Cases currently listed on this Web site were randomly chosen to ensure the public is kept aware of them and to ask for information and assistance in apprehending those responsible. Law enforcement are aware that in each of these cases, there are people – other than the killers – who know who committed the crimes.
If you have information on these cases, or any other unsolved case, call Crime Stoppers at (336) 373-1000. Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible.
All calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential. No names are used and no calls are taped or traced.
You may also contact the homicide squad with any information you may have or call 373-2255 and ask to speak to Sgt. Butler.
