The Director has full management responsibility for all Department services and activities, including review of discrimination cases, research on human relations, and enforcement of anti-discrimination laws in employment, housing, and public accommodations. The Director also conducts the daily business of the Human Relations Commission and is responsible for coordinating the City’s effort to eliminate discrimination and to create improved relationships among all racial and ethnic groups.

The Administrator assists the Director in developing and recommending programs and policies and providing staff support for appointed subcommittees and task forces. The Administrator also provides multicultural training for neighborhoods and community organizations and provides staff support for the Human Relations Commission’s Complaint Review Committee when addressing citizens allegations of police misconduct.

This position manages the Fair Housing Enforcement Division and serves as departmental liaison with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The manager supervises the investigative staff, conciliates fair housing cases, and makes recommendations to the Director based on findings. Additionally, this person writes grant proposals, investigates public accommodations complaints filed with the Human Relations Department, and assists the Human Relations Commission (HRC) and associated committees in the development, coordination, and implementation of ordinance-related initiatives. The manager also administers the Landlord-Tenant Dispute Program, a joint project with the UNCG Program in Conflict Studies and Dispute Resolution, oversees assigned program staff, and facilitates meetings with stakeholder organizations and groups.

Fair Housing Specialist

The Fair Housing Specialist administers the fair housing program and receives and investigates housing discrimination complaints. The Fair Housing Specialist, who is fluent in Spanish, also provides training, outreach, and education to housing providers, the Human Relations Commission, the Commission on the Status of Women, and other interested agencies and groups.

The Administrative Services Coordinator works with the Director and provides research assistance to the Human Relations Commission, the Commission on the Status of Women, and departmental staff. The Administrative Services Coordinator also assists with the departmental budget and processing fair housing complaints under HUD guidelines.

The Executive Assistant provides administrative management and support to department staff and executive secretarial support to the Human Relations Commission and the Commission on the Status of Women.
