Landlord-Tenant Dispute Program The City's Human Relations Department and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) Program in Conflict Studies and Dispute Resolution have formed a partnership to help landlords and tenants iron out their differences through mediation rather than litigation.
Read the program brochure.
The Landlord-Tenant Dispute Program is voluntary and can provide opportunities for tenants and landlords to eliminate communication barriers and work together. Issues that can be mediated include, but are not limited to, damaged property, noise complaints, repairs, and financial problems.
Both parties must agree to come together and discuss the issues. The program's mediator is skilled in assisting landlords and tenants in defining and clarifying issues, reducing obstacles to communication, exploring possible solutions, and reaching a mutually satisfactory agreement. Mediation sessions are scheduled as referrals are made to the Human Relations Department.
How it Works The relationship between a landlord and tenant is important. To assist in preserving that relationship, the program offers dispute resolution services through mediation. Mediation is an informal process of dispute resolution in which a trained mediator, who does not represent either side, assists disputing parties to reach a decision comfortable to both parties. The ultimate decision-making authority rests with the parties themselves. The mediator is not a judge, lawyer or counselor, but is skilled in assisting the landlords and tenants in:
• Defining and clarifying issues • Reducing obstacles to communication • Exploring possible solutions • Reaching a mutually satisfactory agreement.
Benefits
• Gives landlords and tenants the opportunity to speak openly and have questions answered • Remains confidential • Accepts broad range of landlord-tenant issues • Emphasizes cooperative problem-solving
