City of Greensboro Converts to New Meter Reading Technology
As part of the Water Resources Department’s commitment to continuous service and reliability, a new meter reading technology is being installed throughout the service area. This technology will help improve efficiency while providing more convenience to customers.
Over the course of two to three years, crews will be working to convert old style meters to new meters that use RadioRead technology. RadioRead, an automated meter reading (AMR) technology, uses a low-powered radio signal from a transmitting unit connected to the water meter to gather data. Unlike the traditional collection method, RadioRead will allow meter readers to collect multiple readings from one location within a matter of minutes.
The new electronic meters will provide more accurate and reliable water consumption readings regardless of weather, while minimizing the need for someone to access your property to read the water meter. In addition, the technology will allow the City to convert to a monthly billing system for all customers.
The transmitting device is not noticeable because it is installed in the meter box. Replacing the water meter will require us to turn off the water from the meter for a short period of time. No one needs to be home during the installation. If available, an outside spigot will be turned on, only to allow the air that may be trapped in the lines to escape. If air enters your line, this problem can be fixed by simply running your water for a short period of time.
Every effort will be made to minimize inconveniences to customers during the conversion. If you have questions about RadioRead technology, see the list of frequently asked questions or call 373-CITY (2489).
