Illicit Connections and Improper Disposal
The Stormwater Division investigates illicit connections and improper disposals to the storm drain system. Examples of illicit connections and improper disposals could include a building whose pipes drain into a storm drain, someone dumping used oil or leaves into a storm drain or on a creek bank, or a spill of a hazardous substance entering the storm drain system.
Storm sewers are often confused with the sanitary sewer. In Greensboro, these are two separate systems. The sanitary sewer (for example, flushing your toilet, water from washing your dishes, etc.) gets treated at the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant. The storm sewer (for example, curbs on the edge of the street and curb inlets which carry stormwater) does not get treated and drains directly into lakes and streams.
Many environmental problems have been resolved as a result of these investigations. Please report suspected problems by calling the Environmental Helpline at 373-2812.
